The Breckinridge County Historical Society was founded in 1984 with a singular purpose: to gather, preserve, and share the rich history of Breckinridge County, Kentucky, so that future generations may know the land, the families, and the stories that shaped this remarkable corner of the Commonwealth.

Over four decades, the Society has grown into a trusted steward of local memory — collecting photographs, documents, oral histories, and artifacts that might otherwise be lost to time. From the one-room schoolhouses that once dotted the countryside to the churches, families, and communities that built this county from the ground up, we work tirelessly to ensure no story goes untold.

Our work is made possible by the generosity of community members like you. Whether through a financial contribution, the donation of historical materials, or simply by sharing your family's stories, you help us carry this mission forward.

Our reading room and archive are open to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1:00 to 3:00 PM Central Time. We welcome researchers, students, families tracing their roots, and anyone with a curiosity about Breckinridge County's past. We are located at 204 Third Street, P.O. Box 498, Hardinsburg, Kentucky.

Before consolidated schools came to Breckinridge County, learning happened in small timber-framed buildings scattered across the countryside — one teacher, all grades, every season. We are working to document as many of these schools as possible. If you have photographs, records, or memories to contribute, please share them with us.
